Naturephotography - Workshops in Bulgaria

Emil Enchev is offering workshops for you to get to know this country and it's wonderful nature. The abundance of wildlife and
variety in species is opening lot's of opportunities for nature photographers to enjoy their passion. Emil started his photography many years ago and decided in 2004 to stop working as a vet and engage in photography full time. Since he has successfully run many workshops, sharing his passion for Bulgarian nature and the work behind the camera with photographers from all over Europe. Whether you are a beginner or well experienced, just contact us and we will come back to you as soon as possible, trying to answer all your questions.

Philosophy:

We are doing our best to provide you with most individual attention from your first contact on. Our workshops are carefully planned and are carried out in small groups. That way we try to address everyone's needs as much as we can while staying flexible in achieving our plans out there in nature. You as our guest should just have to focus on your passion - nature photography! We will take care of all the bits and pieces around it. Our ultimate goal is it, to offer you the best possible conditions for nature photography and to support you in taking the shots you have long been wishing for.

In General:

Our workshops normally start with your pick-up from the airport. So you will need to organise your travel to Bulgaria yourself. If you however require some assistance with that just let us know, we are happy to help.

We are using a minibus or a normal car to drive to the various locations. Photography is done from mobile or fixed hides, from the car or by just walking. We will supply you with camouflage material and bean bags when needed. The hotels and all meals are organised by us. During our Spring/summer workshops we even sometimes enjoy a picnic outside. Dinner is served in the hotel and after that, often we are sitting together discussing the events of the day. If you like, we can have a more detailed look into your pictures and check, whether there are things that could be improved. The same counts for the work outside - just let us know whether you would like to receive advice on how to further develop your photography, we are more than happy to share our experience with

Floating hide photography Spring Time    2015

In the spring of 2010 with much excitement we launched our first „ floating hide workshop”. It was a wonderful new undertaking. Among the most often comments we received by the participants were words like: “this has been my best experience ever since I have been doing wildlife photography!”. And, to be honest, the excitement among the photographers is not exaggerated. Moving slowly and cautiously with a floating hide, one could get very close to birds and animals at the same time being able to choose the best site considering the direction of sunlight and the background. The low positioning of the camera toward the water surface allows for interesting compositions including reflections and all. Among the main advantages of shooting from a floating hide is the opportunity of being among wildlife without causing any disturbance.

The typical species encountered during this workshop are: Black-necked Grebe, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Red-necked Grebe, Pigmy Cormorant, Little Bittern, Night Heron, Squacco Heron, Ducks, Waders, Black and Whiskered terns and other birds living near the reed beds. With more patience and luck some mammals such as Otter and Water Vole can also be photographed.

During our spring and summer „birds and wildlife workshops” you could also take advantage of our floating hides, yet the number of species and good opportunities would be more limited. If you would like to dive into the magic of the spring lakes and swamps – this workshop is the one you need!

The Sites

Several shallow wetlands along the Danube and the Maritsa River, as well several inland lakes are among our favourite sites. Most of these places are characterized by significant dynamics of their water level and seasonal activity of their inhabitants. Therefore we carefully select the most suitable sites for implementing this workshop every spring.

Typical Itinerary

The quiet sunny mornings are most favoured, trying to be among the birds at dusk already. The duration of the stay on the hide depends on the preferences of the participants, the weather and the behavior of the birds and the animals. Our hides are equipped with comfortable isolated boxes suited to safely store equipment, phones, clothes, food and other personal belongings. The front platform is also fitted with a convenient screw allowing for safe mounting of equipment such as a tripod head with attached long lens+camera. Whenever strong wind appears (fortunately such days are rare in spring) it is not convenient to try the floating hide and we are seeking and offering opportunities of shooting off the water.

Notes

Avoiding the disturbance of waterfowl and other water inhabitants is our main priority. The maximum number of participants allowed is therefore three. The floating hide offered is most successful during the period April 20th – May 20th. You can use our chest waders and neoprene clothes or use your own. This, as well as other details on equipment, logistics and prices will be additionally clarified.

This is a tailor-made workshop and we are happy to organise it for you.

Macro and Landscape Photography in the mountains - Plants, Insects and all the Mountain beauty:

29.6.- 9. July 2018

Main Focus

The beginning of July is late spring in the high mountains, while in their foothills the summer is already in its golden times. Our workshop offers you to explore the high mountains with all the beauty of their alpine meadows, gorges and pine forests. Nature in Bulgarian mountainuous region is very rich in flowers, mushrooms, butterflies, dragonflies and many other wonderful and strange creatures. Several species of reptiles and amphibians can be photographed as well. Truly impressive are the dynamic and odd landscapes- a result of the collision of the mountain relief with that of the rivers of Struma and Mesta and their tributes. Having the charming mountain as a background you will be able to spend a nice, relaxing holiday.

The Sites

Starting and final point is Sofia Airport. During this workshop we will visit the mountain ranges Rila, Pirin and Central Rodopes. Main objects of photography are highland fields and river valleys at altitude between 1000 and 2300 meters. We have focused on places which are fascinating both with their flora as well as with their attractive insect fauna. On our way to these sites we will pass by the foothills of south-western Bulgaria where the climate is influenced by the Mediterranean Sea and typical Mediterranean species of flowers and animals are common. You will be able to enjoy nature in its gripping diversity and beauty.

Level of Fitness

Most of the time we will walk slowly and will make regular stops. However, some days we will cover routes that require 3 to 6 hours of walking through uneven mountain terrain. Therefore, you will have to be in a good health condition and be able to carry your own equipment.

Weather

The high mountain is a good shelter from the hot July days. However, it doesn’t protect us from the sun radiation, especially at noon. Therefore, it is advisable to have hats, sunscreen cream, long-sleeve shirts and sunglasses with you. It is necessary to also carry a jacket in case of rainy or cool weather conditions. Waterproof walking boots are another thing to bring with you.

Cost

  • Participants: 2 – 6 photographers
  • Cost: 1450 EUR per person
  • Single supplement: +150 EUR
  • Deposit: 200 EUR

General informationen about our workshops Spring/Summer 2018

Daily schedule:

The day for us normally starts around sunrise with a short breakfast. After that we leave for our photospots, which we have carefully choosen and prepared well in advance of the workshop. We will approach the wildlife either on foot, from the car or, in most cases, by using a hide. Lunch normally takes place in our hotel or in a nearby restaurant. If participants like to, we also offer to have lunch as a picnic outside in the fields. During the photosessions, each participant has the opportunity to ask questions and receive support from the guide. Typically between 19:30 and 20:00 we are back in the hotel and after dinner, there will be more time to discuss and review that day’s work.

Details:

In case of hot temperatures and very bright sunshine, we will spend some hours over lunch in the hotel. That time of the time does not produce any interesting photos. Depending on the size of the group, we are providing 1 or 2 cars for transportation. This enables us to offer good flexibility in meeting our customer’s expectations as much as possible. All photospots are accessible by car and require only short walks (except our workshop in July – look for more details under Macro workshop on this page!). For those, who would like to use our floating hide, we are offering Neoprene or chest waders in case you can’t bring your own. We are recommending min. a 400mm lens (related to fullframe) and a tripod for birdphotography and a macro- and a zoom lens for smaller things and landscape. Beanbags are provided. Please contact us, if you’d like assistance deciding, which equipment to bring.

Costs:

Our prices include transfer from and to the airport, all local transportation, accommodation in typical hotels, all meals, the use of our hides and guiding.

Not included are: Airfare to Bulgaria, insurances, alcohol and personal expenses.
